Let’s talk about the book. Five Day Fiancé takes place at the wedding of Peyton O’Rourke and Maddy Cooper, so we get to revisit our heroes from The Substitute.

Office sweetheart Allie Jenkins is in dire straits. With her ex of many years moving on with a new woman, she absolutely does not want to be single at the destination wedding she’ll be attending this year.

The solution? Invite her longtime crush, most eligible bachelor Jocko Brewer, to Cancún with her.

Only, she’s about to get a lot more than just another wedding date. Jocko has plans of his own to make this a spicy, fun trip.

I really enjoyed writing within the setting for this story, and I absolutely love how the setting plays into to the plot. Just because they’re on vacation…does that really mean Allie and Jocko will be able to keep anything that happens separate from their office life?

Here’s one of my favorite excerpts, from Jocko’s point of view:

“Good. Now, what about the important questions?” I ask, and I feel my heart hammering a little harder. Seven a.m. on a flight to Cancún might not be the best time to ask some of these things. But I’ve been wondering about Allie ever since we set up this whole vacation. Well, even before that, if I’m being honest.

She squints. “I mean, I think we’ve got it covered. We know each other pretty well.”

I glance at the seats around us in the airplane. Luckily, just about everyone seems to be still passed out, and not paying attention to our conversation. I don’t want what I’m about to say to be overheard.

I give Allie a serious look. “If we’re in a relationship, I think I need to know some other things about you. Like in the bed stuff.”

“Bed stuff?”

“Yeah. What are your turn-ons? Turn-offs?”

Her face flushes red. “Why would that come up in conversation?”

“I don’t know. What if we play like, the newlywed game or something?”

Allie rolls her eyes, resistant. “That game is like twenty years old. We’ll be fine.”

“Well, what if I just want to know for my own curiosity?”

She laughs awkwardly, and is saved from having to respond when the flight attendant appears at the end of our row asking if we’d like anything to drink.

The guy at the end of our row wakes up, and so do the people behind us.

Allie changes the subject, and the moment has passed.

After another hour, I stare out the window at the bright sun as we make our way to Cancún, and a smile plasters itself onto my face.

My theory is, there’s only one reason she would dodge my question about her turn-ons so hard: she’s thought about it before. And she’s trying to keep that wall up between us, too.  I can’t say I blame her. God knows it could be awkward as hell if we hook up on this trip, and then get back to work and are in meetings together.

On the other hand. We’re in fucking Cancún.

And as I look out the window of the airplane and watch the water whiz by below, I get a funny feeling that these next five days in a tropical paradise with Allie are going to be magical.
